Conference call etiquette: the ultimate guide

In today’s world, conference call etiquette is a vital part of your professional toolbelt. In fact, because of the many uses of group phone calls, knowing the expectations for hosts and participants is becoming a basic inter-personal skill. At the same time, though, planning a conference call requires you to consider some factors that don’t come into play in a business meeting.

And maybe the practice isn’t all that familiar to you. There are certain industries where adoption of new technology has been slower. Look at the charitable sector, for example. Despite how much charities can gain by embracing technology, and how useful conference calls are for non-profits, it’s a field notorious for struggling to keep abreast of developments.

Conference calls for charities and non-profits: A vital tool

For any organisation to run smoothly and successfully, collaboration is crucial. And the key to collaboration is communication. If you’re working for a charity or non-profit, you know how important teamwork is to getting anything done, and if some people aren’t sure of what’s going on, or what’s expected of them, chaos tends to ensue. Without maintaining open and easy communication, you’re in for a stressful, frustrating and unproductive ride. But with more and more people embracing flexible and remote work, it’s not always as simple as tapping somebody on the shoulder or having an impromptu meeting. That’s why conference calls for charities are an invaluable tool which the sector should ensure is part of their day-to-day running.

NAMDET: A case study

The National Association of Medical Device Training, or NAMDET, is an organisation which carries out the invaluable work of ensuring that healthcare professionals are fully trained to use all kinds of specialist equipment in their work to look after people’s health. In this capacity, the organisation is crucial to ensuring the safety and care of patients across the country and spanning different medical fields. Because of the sheer spread of their reach, the large and varied membership (from medical engineers to risk and governance managers and nursing staff to operating department practitioners), as well as the instructive nature of their work, there’s no doubt that to the people at NAMDET, good communication is key.

How teleconferencing helped spread Christmas cheer

The festive period has drawn to a close, meaning many of us are returning to work, healthy-eating, money-saving and generally re-introducing the moderations and self-control which allows us to function as adults.

For a lot of people, the break was a very welcome one and brought with it much-needed respite from meetings, deadlines and the sometimes dreaded conference call. With all the mistakes which people continue to frequently make when teleconferencing, it’s not a wonder that some of us can hardly help but roll our eyes when we hear of one being scheduled.

Why record conference calls?

There is nothing more frustrating in a conference than trying to furiously scribble down notes faster than the speaker delivers them. Equally as frustrating is trying to decipher someone else’s hieroglyphic-like scrawls post meeting. If you want to avoid having to resort to either of these then this post is for you.

A large number of us don’t fully understand the power of using call recording until it is too late. The instant we realise that our note taking skills are abysmal, vital information is missing or something which was said has been misheard entirely are times we wish we could go back and hear all the information again.

The good, the bad, and the absent from the Google Voice update

For the first time in five years, Google has announced significant updates to its Google Voice service, with promise of even more developments to come. Many users are hopeful that these new features will start bringing Voice closer to its stated intended function when it was first released: ‘to create “one number for life” – a phone number that’s tied to you, rather than a single device or location’.

The idea was to prevent people from having to have multiple devices connected to multiple numbers – an office landline, a company mobile phone, a personal mobile, a home landline.

Are 6-hour working days a good idea?

For years, Scandinavians have had a reputation for placing at least as much importance on their personal life and well-being as on their professional endeavours and expectations. One consequence of this concern has been the emergence of the 6-hour working day, which first became popular in the 1990s, and is having a resurgence today. But is it really feasible?

Erika Hellstrom, and many like her, the answer is yes. The theory is that working fewer hours means people are actually more productive within the time they do put in, and therefore get just as much done – if not more. It’s not just a case of clocking out of work early; Swedes are expected to completely omit social media, online shopping, personal calls, and other irrelevant activities from their work day. And as these pass-times have been found to eat up a massive 1.5 – 3 hours of the average American worker’s workday, as reported by The Atlantic, the maths adds up. Essentially, you’ll be spending the exact same amount of time working while at work. Just fewer hours squandered procrastinating in the office, and more freed up to spend as you wish.
